Eleven impoverished students have received scholarships totaling 1.1 million naira from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, to help them with their studies, stay motivated, and enhance their academic performance.
After a thorough screening and interview process, the selection committee determined that eleven of the more than 100 applicants for the scholarship were the most qualified for the 2024–2025 ASUU impoverished students prize.
Two students received a total of ₦200,000 on behalf of the National ASUU.
Five students each received ₦100,000 from the ASUU-UI branch at the University of Ìbà dà n.
To support the project, four students, the Union, received ₦50,000 apiece from branch member Professor Tajudeen Àkà njÃ.

The chairman of the ASUU at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Adefemi Afolabi, spoke about the award and said the union felt that brilliant Nigerian youths’ futures shouldn’t be cut short because they can’t pay for their education, even though they face many obstacles like delayed salary payments and the federal government’s slowness in signing a new agreement with the union.
“ASUU views investing in the future of underprivileged students as a way of instilling the values of support and empathy in the beneficiaries so that they will give back to society in the future,” Dr. Afolabi said.
During the presentation of some of the awards, Professor Abiodun Olaniran, the Zonal Coordinator for Ibadan, on behalf of ASUU LAUTECH Chairman Olujimi Dada, insisted that the Union is not self-centered in its pursuit of its members’ welfare alone.
In order to improve their welfare and the educational environment at all public universities, he counseled ASUU members to keep pressing the government to take the necessary action.
It was at the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ Secretariat, Olajuwon Olayide Extension, Ajibode, that the Union presented scholarships to a select group of University of ÃŒbà dà n students.
Omotola Bello (Pharmacy), Bello Ayomide (Medicine and Surgery), Adewumi Mary (Nursing), Moshood Opeyemi (Medicine and Surgery), Adegoke Adeseun Oladayo (Medicine and Surgery), and Omotola Bello (Pharmacy) are a few of the recipients.
