Babcock University, located in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, hit yet another significant milestone on Sunday when it graduated 241 students in the First Class grade and a record 217 scholars with Doctors of Philosophy.
The 2025–2023 convocation of the first private university in Nigeria to open had 3,229 students graduate.
In addition, the convocation represented a major turning point in the institution’s history as Prof. Ademola Tayo, the president and vice chancellor, will formally retire in December 2025 following ten years of revolutionary leadership.
Additionally, it was the first time in history that the Babcock University Centre for Open and Distance e-Learning (BUCODeL), which produced its first batch of 55 graduates, made history.
During a lavish event at the university’s main campus, outgoing Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tayo gave an emotional speech reflecting on ten years of progress under his direction. He said the university saw major advancements in academic and infrastructure development.
Today, he declared, “we unleash not just graduates, but ambassadors of excellence, moral leadership, and faith.” Gratitude fills my heart as I conclude this chapter.

He said, “As the VC, I would be leaving the office on December 1, 2025, but I am happy to note that even as graduates of the school continue to take leadership roles in various spheres of life, the university’s faculty members have won many research grants for life-changing projects in the last year.”
The university’s management was praised by Chancellor Prof. Bassey Idoh for their dedication and hard work in creating graduates who are making a constructive contribution to their communities.
Fatimah Lawal of the Economics Department scored 4.97 on a 5-point Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), making her the best graduating student overall.
Accordingly, Oladele Alabi and Emmanuel Okpechi were the best postgraduates in the PhD program overall, with a combined CGPA of 4.91 on a 5-point scale, while Oluwabamise Adeniyi was the best Master’s degree graduate overall, with a CGPA of 4.89 out of a possible 5.0.
With a PhD in law, Dr. Bolaji Frederick Olusegun became the oldest man to graduate at age 71.
