An alleged attack on students by soldiers from the Army Depot in Osogbo has been officially recorded by Osun State University.
The report came after reports that soldiers who had just passed out from the Nigerian Army Depot in Osogbo had broken into many of the institution’s hostels and attacked students on Monday night.
Prof. Clement Adebooye, the vice-chancellor of the institution, revealed on Tuesday that the issue had been brought to the military authorities after visiting some of the impacted hostels to meet with students and evaluate the situation.
The Army Depot’s close proximity to the university has always been seen as an additional security measure for the campus community, according to Adebooye, who expressed the institution’s serious worry over the occurrence.
“We have sent the depot’s management a report. The vice-chancellor stated, “It is unfortunate that the Army Depot, which is near the campus and we believed would provide us with security cover, could eventually release men who will subject our students to this kind of terrifying experience.”
While investigations into the incident were ongoing, the institution reported that preliminary results indicated that over 20 students had been identified as victims of the alleged attack.
According to complaints from impacted students, soldiers attacked both male and female students during the operation and seized over 60 cell phones and other electronic devices, according to Ademola Adesoji, the institution’s public relations officer.
Some female students reported that the soldiers had undressed them. They claimed that they were indecently touched. According to Adesoji, some male students were also beaten.
He also revealed that, although one kid had been released by Tuesday morning, two students needed hospital care following the event.
Adesoji also stated that while the university administration was still in talks with the Nigerian Army regarding the accusations, three of the suspected offenders had been identified and brought to the campus.
Reports claiming that a female student was raped during the incident were also sent to the institution.
Adesoji countered that since no purported victim had been found, the claim had not been confirmed.
He stated, “We can’t confirm the alleged rape yet,” and that the organization will keep looking into any occurrences that were reported.
It was reported that students were attacked by troops from the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, who allegedly broke into the residence halls. Additionally, it was reported that they stole more than sixty student cell phones and other technological devices.
According to reports, some female students who were part of the batch that had their passing-out parade last Saturday were stripped naked and forced to dance unclad by the marauding military.
