Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has disclosed why he chose to give the University of Calabar School of Dentistry ₦20 million.
He clarified that he gave the money in order to lessen the financial strain on the students.
While political officials lived in luxury, Obi bemoaned the government’s disregard for what he called the most fundamental educational demands of kids.
The former governor of Anambra State stated, “The situation in UNICAL is a direct reflection of failed leadership,” when speaking at the Calabar Airport. We cannot keep letting our kids suffer the most as a result of our political missteps.
“While we spend millions on luxury for those in political office, young Nigerians who are trying to further their education are not provided with the most basic resources.” That shouldn’t be the case.

Obi claimed that the circumstances at the University of Calabar’s Faculty of Dentistry was a clear example of a leadership breakdown in Nigeria’s educational system. According to him, the ₦20 million donation was made to help modernize the faculty’s vital infrastructure.
“The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has set a crucial requirement for increasing the faculty’s student intake, and this token will help procure 15 additional dental chairs,” he stated.
The impacted students’ academic progress had been severely hindered by inadequate facilities, so he urged the authorities to take their plight into consideration.
Obi urged other well-meaning Nigerians and leaders to back organizations like UNICAL, stating that the future of the nation rests on the level of education and empowerment of its people.
