The World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for increased international support to contain the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), saying the spread of the virus is still outpacing response efforts.
Declared less than three months ago, the outbreak has become the largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded in the DRC, prompting concerns about the ability of health authorities and partners to bring it under control.
The latest government update said 3,802 cases and 1,707 deaths had been recorded since the outbreak began.

The outbreak is largely concentrated in remote eastern DRC’s Ituri Province, which accounts for almost 90% of all reported cases. Five other provinces have confirmed infections.
The WHO said on Tuesday it was tracking more than 17,000 possible contacts, with around 80% of those contacts being monitored on a daily basis.
The organisation said that although there are no proven vaccines or treatments for Ebola at present, two clinical trials of post-exposure drugs are underway in Ituri Province.
WHO said two separate vaccine trials are also under way in the United Kingdom and Canada as efforts continue to find effective tools to contain the disease and prevent further spread.
