A member of the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of delaying corrective action in the Labour Party until after former presidential candidate Peter Obi exited the party.
Ogene made the claim during a television interview, questioning why it took the electoral body more than a year to officially recognise Senator Nenadi Usman as the National Chairman of the Labour Party.
He alleged that INEC played a role in destabilising the party, arguing that the commission should be held responsible for the prolonged delay in restoring leadership to those he described as the rightful managers of the party.
Using a local proverb to drive home his point, Ogene said that INEC only felt comfortable taking the appropriate step after Peter Obi’s departure from the party.
He further explained that as far back as September 2024, Labour Party stakeholders meeting in Umuahia had constituted an interim National Executive Council led by Senator Nenadi Usman, yet official recognition was delayed for over a year.
Ogene questioned the justification for the delay, insisting that INEC’s actions contributed significantly to the internal crisis within the Labour Party.
