The Federal Capital Territory’s Minister, Nyesom Wike, justified his continued support for President Bola Tinubu and his allies on Monday, saying his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, “appeared not to have learned.”
Speaking in Abuja during a media parley, Wike reaffirmed that he had previously stated in 2023 that he was supporting the President.
“I told you in 2023 that I was going to work for the President even though I was a PDP man. Since I firmly believe that the other parties did not field genuine candidates, I did just that,” he remarked.
The minister insisted that he had not changed his political stance.
Wike criticized his party’s internal situation, saying that it had not learned from its mistakes.
“I have stated on multiple occasions that, in my opinion, my party has not learned. I said that I will support Mr. President for a second term because of this,” he stated.
He also accused the party of not consulting him when choosing its candidates.
“As a minister, I was not consulted by my party regarding the candidates they planned to present,” he continued.
The minister emphasized that he supports candidates from all political parties as long as they support the President’s reelection campaign.
“I stated that I would back candidates who back Mr. President in his bid for reelection. It makes no difference whose party they are a part of. He stated, “I will definitely set up camp with them if they back Mr. President.”
Wike emphasized that there is more to the process than just voting day when discussing the conduct of the February 21, 2025, FCT elections.
“Elections are a procedure. It starts with candidate nomination, moves through the campaign phase, and ends with voting. It goes beyond a specific day,” he stated.
Wike stated that the decision was issued with presidential sanction and for security concerns in response to the controversy over the movement restrictions that were published prior to the FCT votes.
The President approved the restriction of movement starting at 8 p.m. for security considerations. He stated, “It was to make sure that people didn’t bring troublemakers into the city to cause a crisis.”
He denied that voters were denied the right to vote because of the proposal.
Voting was held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, after the election. You cannot claim that voting was prohibited. “It’s not right,” he said.
In response to complaints about his attendance at polling places, Wike claimed he was acting within his powers.
“I have been given authority. I have a certain level of power to act on behalf of the President,” he stated.
He refuted claims that he had an impact on the election’s result.
“I did not appear on the ballot. Don’t vote for any candidate, I never told anyone. He said, “All I said was that I would back candidates who back Mr. President.”
Wike reaffirmed his political identity in response to allegations of meddling in municipal elections.
I am a politician, let me be clear about that. Politics is about winning, and that’s why I chose to become a politician,” he remarked.
He refuted claims that voters were denied the right to vote.
Describe disenfranchisement. Does claiming that a party is unprepared for an election prevent other parties from casting ballots? According to him, disenfranchisement means that a person was not permitted to vote, which was not the case.
Wike urged resentful parties to pursue legal action in his closing remarks.
“Anyone should visit the tribunal if they are unhappy. Should a rerun be required, allow the tribunal to call off the election. There won’t be any difference in the result,” he stated.
Five of the six chairmanship positions of the Federal Capital Territory’s Area Councils were won by the All Progressives Congress on February 21.
In Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abaji, Bwari, Kwali, and Kuje, the ruling party declared victory; in Gwagwalada, the PDP won the chairmanship.
