House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh has joined the Labour Party (LP) after leaving the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with Abia Governor Alex Otti, Ikwechegh, the federal constituency representative for Aba North and Aba South, stated that the governor’s progress in the state was the reason he chose to join the LP.
“This evening, I went to the governor to get his blessings. Ikwechegh remarked, “As you may or may not be aware, I have received my Labour Party card as a new member of the party.”
“I feel compelled to join the Labour Party because I think the governor’s philosophy and style of leadership are similar to mine.
“Abia State has been genuinely changed by the governor. He has demonstrated that effective leadership is achievable in Nigeria.
“I have chosen to join the Labour Party because we have witnessed a man who genuinely cares about his people.”
The lawmaker denied rumors that he met President Bola Tinubu at the State House last week and then joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
There have been rumors that I joined the APC after meeting with the president. “This is untrue,” he stated.
“I am grateful to the president for his fatherly gesture, and we went to observe the iftar together. I have nothing against my siblings who have chosen to become members of the City Boy Movement or the APC. Interest is what drives politics.
Ikwechegh encouraged Nigerians to sign up and join the LP, particularly those who live in Abia.
Speaking as well, Ginger Onwusibe, a member for Abia’s Isiala Ngwa south/Isiala Ngwa north federal district, stated that Ikwechegh’s defection is a significant advantage for the LP.
He stated, “I came with him as caucus leader to clearly demonstrate that he is now a member of the Labour Party.”
“Having him in our family makes us very happy.” One of the Labour Party’s greatest acquisitions, this will be seen in the 2027 election.
Onwusibe went on to say that Otti’s accomplishments and the work being done in the national legislature by Abia Labour Party members pleased Ikwechegh.
