Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said that political parties can only be seen as real opposition if they win elections, not by making loud claims or forming sudden alliances.
He spoke on Friday during a visit to the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja. There, he also promised to support the party’s new National Working Committee.
Wike said that smaller parties can’t be the opposition without winning elections. He said that the only way to show strength and importance in Nigeria’s political space is to win elections.
He said he came to show support for the new leadership and to let them know that he was still committed to the party as it worked to fix its problems. He said that the PDP had been through a tough time, but that things are getting better. However, he said that it would take more work and sacrifice to rebuild the party.
The former governor of Rivers State told the leaders to focus on bringing people back together, especially by reaching out to party members who had left. He says that a lot of the people who left are still interested in coming back, often because of political opportunities like party tickets.
Wike also warned against distractions, like ongoing court cases. He was sure that the party would get through its legal troubles and come out stronger if it stayed united and focused.
He said, “You can’t become an opposition party if you don’t win an election.” People who say they are leading the opposition haven’t won any elections.
“I’m here to reassure you that I support you. I am here to pledge my loyalty to the National Working Committee.
“Yes, we are in a crisis, but we are almost out of it. To move the party forward, people will have to work hard and give up things.
