Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, Barr Steve Oruruo, has congratulated Kabiru Turaki on his re-emergence as the National Chairman of the party. Oruruo said the emergence of Turaki as the National Chairman of the party was a turning point for the PDP after the recent internal crises.
He told newsmen shortly after his return from Abuja that he had strong confidence in Turaki’s ability to stabilize and reposition the party at a critical moment in the nation’s political terrain.
“I have total confidence in the deep dexterity and unwavering commitment of Kabiru Turaki to steer the troubled party to safety especially at a time Nigeria is begging for a nationally accepted party with proven credentials,” he said.
The Enugu PDP chairman also praised the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) led by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, for what he described as a bold and principled decision.
He said that the BoT had shown unity and integrity in dealing with the crisis.
“The BOT has shown itself to be not only united and untainted, but proudly insulated from all manipulations even at the greatest risk of inducement or threat,” he said.
Oruruo joined the recent Supreme Court judgment that has affected the party with a strong interpretation of the implications.
“The Supreme Court Justices unanimously upheld the suspension of Senator Samuel Anyanwu and others but in a split decision nullified the Ibadan Convention,” he said.
The decision nullifies actions by the suspended faction, he said.
“The impact of this decision is that it is sweeping but devastating, all actions taken by these suspended elements on behalf of the PDP are null and void and of no effect,” Oruruo said.
He called the rival leadership structure illegitimate. “The inauguration of Anyanwu’s National Committee was ab initio a farce. “The Abuja Kirishi convention was also a glitzy joke taken too far.
Having resolved the leadership issue, Oruruo said the party was ready to resume political activities in all parts of the country.
“Our party is ready to start selling the interest and nomination forms to interested aspirants through the legitimate and genuine leadership from the national to subnational levels, now that the BOT has acted boldly in line with the judgment of the Supreme Court,” he said.
The Enugu PDP chairman also urged for a wider political reset in Nigeria, saying people-oriented governance is required.
“We owe the Nigerian people a duty to recalibrate and reinvent the Nigerian leadership model to resonate with the aspirations and yearnings of the electorate.
“We will seize the wheel of statecraft and steer it towards the will of the majority,” he said.
