Shehu Shagari’s grandson, Nura Muhammad Mahe, has accused the late former president Muhammadu Buhari of treating Shagari’s death and funeral in 2018 with “little respect.”
Mahe compared Buhari’s actions to those of President Bola Tinubu in a statement issued on Wednesday. He praised Tinubu for arranging for Buhari to be buried in a state cemetery in Daura on Tuesday with full military honors after he passed away on Sunday, July 13.
Mahe called the formation of a high-level national burial committee and President Tinubu’s attendance at Buhari’s funeral “a gesture of honor and a symbol of national unity.”
“This stands in sharp contrast to the treatment of the late President Shehu Shagari under Muhammadu Buhari’s administration,” he stated.
Regardless of prior political disagreements, he hailed Tinubu’s action as appropriate for a former head of state and a reminder of how the country should respect its leaders.

Mahe reflected on Shagari’s death in December 2018, noting that Buhari, who was in the nation at the time, did not give his predecessor a state burial or attend the funeral.
“On his behalf, a government delegation headed by Boss Mustapha, the then-secretary to the Government of the Federation and a notable non-Muslim,” he stated.
Given Shagari’s historical status as Nigeria’s first democratically elected Executive President, he contended that such a strategy demonstrated a “lack of empathy and decorum.”
“The fact that Shagari’s death happened under the direction of a man who many believe harbored political animosity toward him is still a painful memory,” Mahe bemoaned.
“Buhari demonstrated little public regret or regard for his predecessor, even in his final days.”
Mahe concluded by praying for Nigeria’s former leaders and pleading with the country to put aside its political conflicts when it dies.
“May Allah pardon and give eternal rest to all of our former leaders.” Whether they are praised or criticized, their legacies will always be a part of our country’s history,” he continued.
