Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has come under heavy fire from the Lagos State branch of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, for his comments suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is attempting to solidify his hold on power by establishing a “life presidency.”
The party’s publicity secretary, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, called the remark “mischievous, reckless, and an affront to Tinubu’s lifelong commitment to democratic principles” in a statement released on Monday.
According to Oladejo, the President played a significant part in the pro-democracy movement in Nigeria in the 1990s, especially through his strong participation in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

At considerable personal risk, he pointed out, Tinubu continuously resisted military dictatorship and tried to restore civilian authority.
He stated that with Tinubu’s history of opposing tenure extensions and defending constitutional order, it was “laughable and shameful” for anyone, particularly El-Rufai, to cast doubt on his democratic credentials.
Nigeria’s democracy is protected by constitutional term limits, strong institutions, and a well-established system of checks and balances, the Lagos APC emphasized, adding that Tinubu’s commitment to the country’s constitution is steadfast.
