Party sources told The Whistler that consultations over who will run with the ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, have reached the final stage.

The party is weighing a number of factors before choosing a running mate, said a source familiar with the discussions.

“They are looking at different factors including political strength, regional calculations and acceptability across the country, the source said.

Amaechi, who later contested the ADC presidential primary, was said to have come second to Atiku with 509,397 votes.

But he has refused to accept the result of the primary, citing alleged irregularities and widespread disenfranchisement.

Another name being considered is Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and former governor of Imo State who has both legislative and executive experience.

Some party chieftains see Duke, who governed Cross River State between 1999 and 2007, as a candidate who could draw support from outside of the traditional party lines but doubts remain about his current political strength.

Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate with 1,846,370 votes in the party’s primary election.

The former vice president, who was under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007, has made several attempts to become president.

He also contested or sought the office in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.

Atiku has referred to the 2027 race as his “last outing”.
