It has been reported that Rotimi Amaechi, the former Minister of Transportation, turned down Peter Obi’s request for him to step down for him before the 2027 presidential election.
People who talked to Leadership said that the appeal was made at a meeting at Amaechi’s house in Abuja over the weekend.
People said that Obi was with Achike Udenwa, the former governor of Imo State, and Senator Victor Umeh.
Amaechi, Obi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have all said they want to run for president in 2027 on the African Democratic Congress platform, which is led by Senator David Mark.
The Independent National Electoral Commission set party primaries for April 23 to May 30, and parties must use either direct primaries or consensus arrangements.
Someone who was at the meeting said that Amaechi turned down Obi’s request and made it clear that he was serious about running for president.
The source said that the former minister “politely turned down the request of the former presidential candidate,” and that his decision to run was not just for show.
Eze Eze, a friend of Amaechi and a leader in the ADC, said that the former governor would not drop out of the race.
He said, “Amaechi thinks that if he loses the primaries, he will support whoever wins, and he expects the same from the other candidates if he wins.”
“As of now, Amaechi is not quitting for anyone.”
