Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that selecting him as vice-president in 1999 was his biggest presidential mistake, insisting that history tells a different story.
In a statement released on Saturday through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku accused Obasanjo of attempting to rewrite the history of their political relationship. According to him, he stood firmly by Obasanjo during his imprisonment under the military regime, supported his family throughout the difficult period, and worked alongside other pro-democracy advocates to secure his release.
The former vice-president further claimed that after Obasanjo regained his freedom, he provided him with personal support and helped him regain political relevance. He also maintained that he mobilised political structures and forged alliances that were instrumental in Obasanjo’s victory in the 1999 presidential election, which ushered Nigeria into the Fourth Republic.

Responding to Obasanjo’s recent remarks at a Lagos event hosted by activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, Atiku insisted that he had no regrets over his role in opposing the controversial third-term agenda during the Obasanjo administration.
According to him, defending the Constitution was more important than personal loyalty to any individual.
“I am proud that I stood against the third-term agenda,” Atiku said, stressing that democracy prevailed because Nigerians rejected attempts to alter constitutional provisions for political ambition.
He argued that if Obasanjo remained upset because he refused to support the tenure extension plan, he considered such resentment a badge of honour.
The former vice-president also cited comments reportedly made by WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala acknowledging the achievements of the economic management team during the Obasanjo administration, saying such recognition validates his contributions.
Atiku, however, lamented that political leaders were dwelling on old disagreements instead of addressing Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, economic hardship and unemployment.
He urged politicians to focus on rebuilding the country ahead of the 2027 elections rather than reopening old political disputes.
