Samuel Anyanwu, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, has gone to the Court of Appeal to fight a decision that upheld his expulsion from the party.
Anyanwu, who is the national secretary of a part of the PDP, filed the notice of appeal on April 10, according to reports.
Anyanwu said in his appeal that the Federal Capital Territory High Court was wrong to throw out his case against the party’s disciplinary action.
He disagreed with Justice Yusuf Halilu’s decision, which supported the PDP disciplinary committee’s recommendation.
The court said that the committee gave him a chance to defend himself and that he didn’t show that the process was “fundamentally defective.”
In March 2025, the Tom Ikimi-led disciplinary committee suggested that Anyanwu be kicked out for allegedly doing things that were bad for the party. This was after a request from the PDP Young Generation Caucus.
The committee said that he didn’t show up even though he had been asked to.
Later, in November 2025, the PDP announced the expulsion of Anyanwu, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, at its national convention in Ibadan. The decision also had an effect on other party members.
Anyanwu based his appeal on nine reasons, which called into question important parts of the lower court’s decision.
He said that the trial judge was wrong to say that the lawsuit was too early because he hadn’t used all of the party’s internal options.
The appellant also said that the court was wrong to say that he asked it to decide whether the actions of a political party organ were proper.
He wants the court to throw out the lower court’s decision.
The people who are listed as respondents are Iliya Umar Damagun, Tom Ikimi, Abdullahi Idris Uma, Talford Ongolo, Emma Ibeshi, Zainab Maina, Chille Igbawua, and Eyitayo Jegede.
The development comes at a time when the PDP is having trouble with its leadership, with different groups fighting over who controls the party.
Abdulrahman Mohammed leads one group that is loyal to Wike, while Kabiru Tanimu Turaki leads the other. Both sides have taken legal action against each other over who controls the party, which has made the divisions within the party even worse.
