The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been accused by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of being more effective when opposition politicians are involved.
Following the arrest and detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, made the assertion in an appearance on ARISE Television on Thursday.
Abdullahi voiced his worry that the country’s anti-corruption agencies were being seen as biased.
He stated, “We have two national institutions funded by public funds, the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, to probe and investigate corruption charges and prosecute people for corruption practices.”
However, they seem to work best when opposing figures are involved. Furthermore, the transformation of national institutions into political actors worries us.
In addition, the ADC spokesperson questioned what he called selective prosecution.
The reason for this is that you only need to glance at the government’s side to notice the types of people that belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress. Abdullahi claimed, “There are people who have been investigated in the past and who still have cases in court, but the moment they join the ruling party, they use the broom to sweep it under the carpet.”
But he insisted that the party was not endorsing the guilt or innocence of the parties.
Therefore, we are not defining whether El-Rufai or Malami are guilty or not. We are worried that national institutions are being weaponized against opposition leaders and distorted,” he continued.
