The Kwankwasiyya Movement has said it is studying the recent Supreme Court judgment on the leadership dispute within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) carefully to avoid any political or legal trap ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It was reported that the statement was issued on Friday, signed by the movement’s spokesperson, Habibu Sale Mohammed.
The group praised the Supreme Court for its so-called courage and clarity in handling the matter.
The judgment overturned earlier orders that caused confusion in the party and was a victory for due process, the movement said.
It also said the ruling demonstrated the judiciary’s role as a stabilising force in a democracy.
“The court has restored order by correcting the procedural irregularities that resulted in the artificial suspension of the party leadership and reaffirmed the fact that institutions must work within the confines of the law,” it said.
While the substantive case had been sent back to the trial court, the movement noted that the ruling had set the stage for justice and fairness in the next phase of the matter.
Group Nervous Of Political Snag
The Kwankwasiyya Movement said it was studying the judgment thoroughly because of the short time left in the electoral cycle.
“We are at this critical juncture carefully studying the judgment and rigorously analysing its implications especially given the limited time within the electoral cycle,” it said.
The review was needed to prevent any situation that could affect the participation of its leader and other opposition figures in the 2027 elections, the group said.
It said: “This is necessary to ensure that we do not inadvertently fall into any political or legal trap that could undermine or prevent our principal and other key actors within the opposition from effectively participating in the 2027 general elections.”
The movement said it was considering legal and strategic options including potential alliances with other political platforms.
“We are currently reviewing all legal and strategic avenues available to remove any such barriers,” it said.
It mentioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) as potential platforms for engagement.
The group said its goal was to protect democratic participation and stop Nigerians being denied their right to vote.
“Our aim is clear: to safeguard our political rights, to defend democratic participation, and to ensure that no manufactured circumstances can silence the voice of the people,” the statement said.
The Kwankwasiyya Movement told its followers a decision on its political direction will be made in the near future.
“An official position of our leader about a new political alignment will be communicated in no distant time”, it said.
The group also stressed the importance of strong institutions and citizen participation in order to sustain democracy.
“Nigeria’s democracy must be protected not only by the strength of its institutions but by the courage of its people to stand firm in the face of uncertainty,” it stated.
The group urged members to remain calm and focused while consultations continue, stating the movement remained united and committed to the democratic process.
