The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership gave the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum on Tuesday if it doesn’t complete talks with all unions headquartered in tertiary institutions.
The government imposed a no-work-no-pay policy on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities as a form of punishment for their audacity in starting a statewide strike, which was denounced by the workers union.
The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, issued the directive at the ongoing interactive session with labor correspondents in Abuja.
Following the meeting between the NLC and union representatives from tertiary institutions at the NLC headquarters in Abuja, there was an interactive session.
“The federal administration has been given four weeks to wrap up all negotiations in this area. Although they have begun negotiations with ASUU, the issue in this industry is not limited to ASUU.
We are extending this to four weeks because of this. If this agreement is not completed within four weeks, the NEC’s organs will convene and launch a nationwide action in which all of the nation’s workers and unions will participate in order to address the underlying causes of the problem.
“The days of negotiating, signing contracts, and intimidating the participating unions are over.
“The so-called “no work, no pay” policy will henceforth be just that—no pay, no work. An activity that you initiated cannot be advantageous to you. We’ve found that 90% of strike actions in this nation are the result of noncompliance with agreements,” Ajaero stated.
