Sumner Sambo, the Director of News at Arise News, says that the North and Southeast have always been Nigeria’s best political partners.
He said that Nigeria had its best political alliances in the first republic with Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ahmadu Bello, and Tafawa Balewa, and in the second republic with Alex Ekwueme and Shehu Shagari.
Sambo was mostly talking about Peter Obi’s alliance with Rabiu Kwankwaso and how their support groups are working together to get ready for the general elections.
He also talked about how important Peter Obi’s recent trip to Bauchi State was, saying that it was huge.
“I was with Obi when we traveled around the country in 2022. We went to Bauchi first, where we had to visit the Abubakar Tafa Balewa Mausoleum and some pictures of Obi. Every time I look at them, I remember the first time we went there and then see him go there again, but this time not alone or with a few people.
“I mean, when we went there in 2022, Obi wasn’t very well known, even though the Governor hosted him. But now Obi is going to the same state, and this time he’s bringing a lot of political weight and very powerful politicians with him. I mean, some of the most important leaders from the South East. You will see that the delegation was actually very, very strong.
“And I think the words that will come out of that meeting will help bring the North and the South, especially the South East, together, build more bridges, and ease the tension we’ve always had.
“Listen, the best political partnerships we’ve ever had in the country have always been between the North and the South East. That comes from the First Republic. That has always been the way things were. We should be seeing mature politics right now, not the kind of talk that makes it look like Nigeria is going to war. And then some people are saying that the southeast will never get a chance.
“When I saw Peter Obi at the Government House in Bauchi, I was very happy because everyone welcomed him.”
