The Osun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party-aligned Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has spoken out against a recent protest by council chairmen who were elected under the All Progressives Congress.
On Thursday, the PDP-backed ALGON leadership denied claims made by the APC chairmen that the state judiciary had broken court orders in cases involving the management of local governments.
On Wednesday, the APC council chairmen held a protest outside the Osun State High Court in Osogbo because of the ongoing trial of officials from a commercial bank that was linked to local government allocations.
During the protest, the protesters held up signs that said things like “Say no to disobeying court orders” and “Disrespecting court decisions is an invitation to anarchy.”
Kolapo Olayanju, the chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Authority, spoke for the protesters and said that the state judiciary and Governor Ademola Adeleke were ignoring legal orders.
The PDP ALGON leadership, on the other hand, called the protest wrong and questioned why it happened.
The statement, which was signed by both its chairman, Sarafa Awotunde, and secretary, Lukman Afolabi, called the protest “embarrassing and disgraceful.”
It said that the APC chairmen had stayed in charge of council administrations after their terms ended.
The statement says, “They have been in council offices for about 14 months after their term was supposed to end in October 2025, and they have kept collecting money that was supposed to go to local governments.”
The PDP group also questioned the APC chairmen’s choice to protest at the court instead of letting the legal process take its course.
“Do they want to rush the courts? The statement said, “If they are sure of their claims, they should let the court decide.”
