The Supreme Court has not yet made a decision on the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about its canceled convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
The court made a decision in the case it was hearing, which had Sule Lamido, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Austin Nwachukwu, and two other people as respondents.
This happened after the processes were regularized and the substantive appeal was heard.
The Taminu Turaki-led group of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) went to the Supreme Court to try to overturn the Court of Appeal’s decision that the party’s national convention in Ibadan was not valid.
On Wednesday, a five-member panel from the highest court said that it would announce its decision on a date that would be communicated to everyone involved in the appeal.
Justice Garba Mohammed, who led the five-member panel, made the announcement just after lawyers for both sides in the appeal filed their briefs of their arguments for and against the appeal.
The national leaders of the party that Turaki led and came out of the convention filed the appeal.
The steps were taken on Wednesday after the Supreme Court started hearing cases that had to do with the opposition party’s leadership and activities.
Naija News also remembers that Lamido wasn’t allowed to go to the PDP’s Ibadan National Convention, where the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) was formed.
The former governor wanted to go to the convention and run for the PDP National Chairmanship position.
After that, Lamido went to court to contest the results of the National Convention.
Lamido told the court that he couldn’t use his basic rights to run for national chairmanship of the party.
Both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal in Abuja agreed with his case.
The appellants, led by their team of lawyers headed by Paul Erokoro (SAN), asked the Supreme Court to not only allow their appeal but also throw out a cross-appeal filed against them by a leadership group in the party that supports the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
At the same time, Lamido, who was represented by Mr. J. C. Njikonye (SAN), and the Wike-backed group, who were represented by Joseph Daudu (SAN), both filed preliminary objections asking for the appeal to be thrown out.
The respondents said that, against what the Turaki-led group said, the appeal was not part of the PDP’s internal affairs.
