Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has chosen the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, to be the Chancellor of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State.
Christian Aburime, Soludo’s Chief Press Secretary, made the announcement in a press release on Wednesday.
The statement says that Kukah’s appointment as chancellor of the University is meant to use his global network to build international partnerships, encourage ethical leadership at the University, and show that the University is committed to graduating well-rounded students.
Aburime said that Kukah is a well-known Nigerian scholar and religious leader whose work combines academic research with the fight for social justice in Nigeria.
The statement said, “Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, has named Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, the Chancellor of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State.”
“Kukah is a well-known Nigerian scholar and religious leader whose work combines academic research with the fight for social justice in Nigeria.
He went to St. Augustine Major Seminary Jos in Plateau State to study philosophy and theology. Then he went to the University of Ibadan to get a diploma in religious studies, the Pontifical Urban University in Rome to get a bachelor of divinity, and the University of Bradford to get a master’s degree in peace studies. Finally, in 1990, he got a Ph.D. from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
He also went to the University of Oxford in the UK and Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at different times.
“Kukah is also a prolific writer and the founder of The Kukah Centre, where he has pioneered research-driven advocacy aimed at interfaith harmony and policy reform.
It is hoped that Bishop Kukah’s appointment as chancellor of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University will help the school make international partnerships, encourage ethical leadership, and show that it is committed to producing well-rounded graduates.
