Bayo Onanuga has responded to claims that Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), had previously been reported dead before his recent elimination in a joint Nigerian-American military operation.
In a statement posted on đť•Ź on Saturday, Onanuga explained that earlier reports connecting Al-Manuki to a 2024 military operation were based on mistaken identity.
According to him, Al-Manuki’s name had appeared among suspected ISWAP commanders reportedly killed during operations around the Birnin Gwari forest axis in Kaduna State in 2024. However, security authorities have since clarified that the earlier report was inaccurate and resulted from misattribution during ongoing counterinsurgency operations.
The statement noted that intelligence findings later showed the Birnin Gwari area was not within Al-Manuki’s known operational territory, further weakening the earlier claim.
Onanuga said security agencies are far more confident about the latest operation, stressing that it followed months of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) activities, including communications monitoring and phone intercepts reportedly dating back to December 2025.
He explained that the operation was built on prolonged digital surveillance, human intelligence gathering, and movement tracking across several locations in northern Nigeria.
According to the statement, authorities initially sought to capture Al-Manuki alive, which was why he was reportedly monitored in locations including Abuja and Maiduguri before the final operation was carried out.
The presidential aide added that the latest strike involved multiple layers of intelligence verification, target validation, and coordinated operational planning, distinguishing it from earlier incidents where battlefield assessments later proved inaccurate.
Security officials, he said, maintain that “this time, there is no ambiguity” regarding the elimination of the ISWAP commander.
