Four National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and two others died in a tragic road accident involving a military gun truck and a commercial bus in Adamawa State.
The Adamawa State Police Command disclosed that the deadly accident occurred on Wednesday at the Narehi area of Girei Local Government Area on the Girei-Song Road.
The “accident involved a military gun truck on the way from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi,” Suleiman Nguroje, the command’s spokesman, said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision before the commercial bus somersaulted and burst into flames, Nguroje said.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that both vehicles were involved in a head-on collision that resulted in the commercial bus flipping over and catching fire,” the statement said.
It said all the five passengers on the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire after the collision, stressing that preliminary identification showed that four of the deceased were serving NYSC members posted to Adamawa State.
The victims have been identified as Suleuman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, while efforts are on to identify the rest of the victims.
The command also confirmed that a military personnel attached to the gun truck died in the accident and the corpses have been evacuated to the Specialist Hospital, Yola. It said efforts were ongoing to identify the remaining bodies and locate their families.
The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police has commiserated with the families of the bereaved, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the NYSC and all those touched by the tragedy.
