The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State has officially pulled out of the plan to switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC). They say the ruling party wouldn’t agree to important terms and conditions that were brought up during negotiations.
The main opposition party said that since the talks about defection fell through, it has been looking into other possible political options.
It should be remembered that after his failed defection to the ruling APC, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said he might join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) because there was still a leadership dispute in his own party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Sama’ila Burga, the state chairman of the PDP, said at a press conference yesterday at the PDP Secretariat along Yandoka Road in Bauchi that the party’s decision to stop talking about politics was because the two parties couldn’t agree on important terms.
He said the purpose of the briefing was to let the public know about changes in the party, its leaders, and important stakeholders.
He said that the PDP went into the talks with good intentions to help both sides understand each other better and look into working together politically for the good of the state as a whole.
He did say, though, that the talks didn’t end up going the way he wanted them to, saying, “We went into the talks with good intentions and an open mind, but we couldn’t find common ground.”
Burga went on to say that the party made the decision after a lot of discussions and consultations with important people, including members of the National Assembly, State House of Assembly members, and local government party leaders.
He said that the main reason the APC leadership couldn’t agree on some important terms and conditions during the negotiations was because they couldn’t accept them.
He went on to say, “There was no agreement on several key issues, so we thought it was best to end the process.”
The PDP chairman also said again that the party is committed to finding political ways that are best for the people of Bauchi State.
He said, “We will keep looking at other political options that will help the people.”
The party said again that it would work to improve governance, unity, and progress for everyone under Governor Bala Mohammed. It would also keep working on the state’s growth and the well-being of its people.
When asked by reporters, he said that the party was aware of the deadlines for elections and would do everything it could to meet all legal requirements.
He also said that the PDP would keep looking into all of its political options in the best interests of its members and the people of Bauchi State as a whole.
Governor Mohammed had said that he might switch to the ADC after his attempt to switch to the APC failed.
The APC was said to have agreed to a 60/40 power-sharing deal in favor of the governor and also offered him a Senate seat.
But the ruling party wouldn’t let him pick a successor, which caused the talks about him leaving to fall apart.
