Bolaji Abdullahi, the leader and spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized the government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for interfering with opposition parties and warned that this could have serious consequences for Nigeria’s democracy.
Abdullahi said that the problems in the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) might have something to do with the recent visit by PRP leaders, including National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, to the ADC leadership.
He said that rumors that opposition leaders were thinking about other political platforms may have caused problems within the PRP, and a faction is said to have formed soon after.
The ADC leader said that the development is part of a larger trend that is affecting opposition parties.
He agreed that the APC has denied being involved in fights between rival parties, but he said that recent events suggest otherwise.
He warned that any plan that seems to be aimed at weakening opposition parties could have effects on the stability of the country that were not intended.
He says that hurting political alternatives could make it harder for people to make democratic choices.
It said, “About three weeks ago, the PRP’s leadership, led by National Chairman Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, paid a courtesy visit to the ADC’s National Chairman.” A few days later, people started to talk about the possibility that the coalition leadership was thinking about the PRP. This isn’t true, but just one whiff of speculation was enough to create a faction in what had been a peaceful political party for a long time. This faction challenged Baba-Ahmed’s leadership.
“This is what Nigeria’s democracy is like under the All Progressives Congress.” The government may keep saying that they had nothing to do with the problems in other parties, saying that they are just internal problems, but the pattern is clear.
