Julius Abure, a factional national chairman of the Labour Party, has warned the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership against giving former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and his allies too much power within the party.
In response to rumors of disputes over the distribution of elective positions within the NDC, Abure made the statements in a statement released on June 8, 2026.
Based on the Labour Party’s experience during and after the 2023 general election, the chairman of the Labour Party claimed that the NDC leadership, led by Senator Seriake Dickson, had made the essential choice to deny all political positions requested by Obi’s followers.
Abure claimed that instead of supporting the party’s expansion, a number of political office holders who rose to prominence on the Labour Party platform ultimately turned against the party leadership.
It’s said that history frequently repeats itself. “They have seen their trajectory and learned from what happened to us,” stated Abure.
He claims that a number of lawmakers who profited from the Labour Party’s agenda later sided with Obi and were entangled in disagreements regarding the party’s leadership.
Ahead of the 2023 elections, Abure said, the Labour Party leadership made a number of compromises, including caving in to Obi’s and many of his supporters’ demands.
We provided tickets to the majority of his fans based only on his body language. We thought we were investing in those people, thus the majority of the tickets were handed away for free,” he said.
Additionally, Abure charged that after winning elections on the LP platform, several elected officials supported attempts to overthrow the party leadership.
“Obi took all those elected under the party to fight the party leadership,” he declared.
In order to maintain internal stability, Abure contended that political parties should maintain a balance in the allocation of posts and power among members.
“It is excellent that Seriake Dickson did not provide Obi supporters with what they required in the NDC. In order to have individuals who will speak up and support him when things become tough, he had to bring his own people, he continued.
The chairman of the Labour Party further charged that the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, was responsible for the leadership crisis that arose within the party following the 2023 elections. He claimed that certain party leaders had accepted allegations that the tenure of the party’s executives had expired.
Abure claimed that “the leaders, especially Peter Obi and Alex Otti, decided to take over the leadership of the party.”
He insisted that inquiries from the general public on the Labour Party’s handling of Obi and his followers throughout the 2022–2023 election season impacted his remarks.
