Rotimi Amaechi, who used to be the Minister of Transportation and the Governor of Rivers State, says that a lot of Nigerians want to vote President Bola Tinubu out of office in 2027.
On Friday, he said this on Channels Television.
Amaechi, who spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program on Friday, said that the country’s economy is getting worse and people are having a harder time.
The ex-minister said, “Everyone is hurting, and everyone is looking for food.” People can’t travel or buy gas. The airlines are threatening to raise the price of travel; everything is going up.
“Please, President Tinubu does not have the right to speak. He does not. He promised power and said that people shouldn’t vote for him if he doesn’t give them power. Nigerians are ready to vote him out.
He also said that religion and ethnicity shouldn’t play a role in Nigeria’s political choices and that these factors helped create the current situation.
Amaechi, on the other hand, has said that he does not agree with the idea of choosing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election by consensus.
He did say, though, that he is willing to back whoever wins the ADC presidential primary, but he would rather the party hold a primary election.
Amaechi made his position clear in response to a statement made earlier by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who said that the ADC would first look into the possibility of choosing its flagbearer through consensus.
He said, “I will support him if he wins, but I don’t agree with those who say he is the consensus candidate.” Let’s go out and talk to the people. They can choose who they want to be in the party.
“There has to be a primary election in the ADC.” I don’t agree with people who say there should be a candidate that everyone agrees on.
Amaechi said that zoning is an internal process of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and should not be binding in modern times.
The former governor also said that being younger than the other candidates for president gives him an edge because the job needs someone who still has the ability to do it.
“Atiku is very qualified to be the president of Nigeria. He has the right to run, but he should know that zoning is a PDP thing. I don’t agree with this south, north, whatever. What I do agree with is that the most qualified candidate should be allowed to govern or be elected.
“I’m the youngest candidate in the race right now; I’m 60. The other people are in their 70s. “This thing needs capacity,” he said.
