Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has warned against the prevailing optimism on Nigeria’s economic reforms, saying that despite positive macroeconomic indicators, millions of Nigerians have not felt any significant improvement in their daily lives.

The former Abia state governor said this on Monday in Sokoto after commissioning a road project executed by the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu at Arkilla New Layout area. His remarks come amid a growing debate over whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms are delivering concrete dividends for the ordinary Nigerian.

Kalu conceded there have been improvements in the broader economy but said worsening insecurity and economic hardship have prevented many citizens from benefiting from the gains being touted by government officials.

The senator said he had taken his concerns directly to President Tinubu, highlighting what he called a growing gap between the positive economic data and the realities facing families and small businesses across the country.

“Things may look hard today. “Why, yes, I am an industrialist, as you see. The macro economy is good but the micro economy is bad. “I told the President this,” he said.

Kalu said security is the missing link in Nigeria’s economic recovery efforts, adding that no reform programme can thrive when investors, businesses and communities are still battling with instability and violence.

“What this country needs is economic expansion so that there can be money, prosperity and goodness to Nigerians. “This is what the country needs,” he said.

Kalu lauded Tinubu for his policies geared towards growing the economy, while also criticizing him. He however added that the reforms will continue to attract scrutiny until the benefits are seen at the grassroots.

He was confident that more investment in security would unlock economic opportunities, increase prosperity and ensure that the gains of reform were felt beyond official economic reports.

Kalu also seized the opportunity to reiterate his call for national unity.

“Nigeria is one and I will continue to pray and plead for the unity of this country until I die,” he said.

The senator also commended the Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, for his zeal for infrastructure in the state and thanked him for inviting him to commission the road projects.
