The Rivers State Police Command has arrested and detained some officers allegedly caught in a viral video circulating on social media extorting motorists.
The incident involving officers attached to the Old GRA Police Station in Rivers State was brought to the notice of the public on Tuesday, June 23, 2026. The officers were said to have been singling out drivers, especially those with tinted windows and asking for money even though they had valid permits.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Kaborlo, on behalf of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, the command has confirmed the arrest and investigation of ASP Omomefe Akin Geoffrey and other officers mentioned in the allegations.
The statement said the officers were arrested, detained and ordered to be investigated immediately by CP Adepoju over allegations of extortion.
“No form of unprofessional conduct, illegal collection of money or extortion by police personnel will be tolerated under any circumstances,” he said.
The Commissioner assured residents that the investigation will be “thorough, transparent and impartial”, warning that any officer found guilty will face disciplinary action in accordance with the law and the Nigeria Police Act.
The police command also urged members of the public to continue to report cases of misconduct, corruption and abuse of office through official complaint channels assuring them of its commitment to professionalism, integrity and accountability.
