Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated that the G5 Governors’ activities during the 2023 presidential election were important in stabilising Nigeria and preventing post-election chaos.
According to reports, Wike made the comment on Monday during a meeting with “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP” from the 36 states and the FCT in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor stated that the G5 Governors’ decision not to support their party’s presidential nominee, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was based on a principled stance to maintain the North-South zoning arrangement.
The G5 group consisted of Wike, Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).
“You may like us, you may hate us; the truth is if G5 did not take our decision, this country would have been in crisis,” according to Wike.

“It doesn’t matter who the beneficiary was, but the right thing had to be done, and we still stand by that decision.”
According to Wike, the PDP ignored the constitution.
Wike, a vocal critic of the PDP leadership, claimed that the party’s failure to follow its own constitution on zoning was to blame for its electoral defeat.
“We have continued to emphasise that the party’s constitution and that of the country should be respected,” stated the spokesperson. “If the party had listened to what we said, we wouldn’t have been where we are today.”
He chastised some party officials of acting without consequences and warned that money and vanity were threatening the opposition party’s viability.
“Ours is to continue to pacify people and bring them together and desist from saying that they should go to hell,” according to Wike. “Let us not allow greed; let us not allow ego to kill our party.”
Despite internal squabbles and the aftermath of the 2023 elections, Wike expressed confidence that the PDP may still rebound if party stakeholders band together and address the core causes of discord.
Other major PDP heavyweights attended the conference, including former governors Samuel Ortom, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Okezie Ikpeazu. Senator Philip Aduda, former Senate Minority Leader, and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, PDP National Secretary, were also in attendance.
